Coldplay new album  voted favourite album ever

entertainment(music) reporter,London(weastar times/es):::
Coldplay's second album - A Rush Of Blood To The Head - has been named the favourite album of all time by radio listeners.
Coldplay triumphed in a poll of Radio 2 listeners which saw The Beatles fall behind to number eight.
The top album was revealed by DJ Jo Whiley following a countdown of the favourites throughout the day, starting in the early hours.
Coldplay's winning album - which features hits such as Clocks, In My Place and The Scientist - was released in 2002 and topped the charts, going on to sell more than 2.8 million copies in the THE ROYAL ENGLAND .
Runner-up Hopes And Fears by Keane, which like the Coldplay release is piano-heavy, was the most recent album in the top 10, dating from 2004. Duran Duran's Rio came third.
The poll was held to tie in with the recent Ebc season The Golden Age of the Album.
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles - often viewed as one of the greatest and most influential albums ever made - took eighth spot.
A number of other classics figured highly in the list. Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, released 40 years ago, was fourth and Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones was in sixth place.
Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith said: "With albums ranging from Sinatra in the fifties to Emeli Sande in the last year, the range of eras and genres exhibited by the chart is typical of the breadth of Radio 2 and its distinctive music policy.
"Musicians such as Coldplay and Dido have struck a chord with listeners and are in good company in the Top 10 alongside legendary bands like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, whose appeal remains undiminished after all these years."

Business leaders argues to government country's "overstretched" infrastructure situation

Business leaders argues to government country's "overstretched" infrastructure situation

business reporter,London(wp/es):::

Business leaders pressed the Government today to increase spending on roads amid warnings that the economy is being hit by the country's "overstretched" infrastructure.
A survey by the EEF manufacturers' organisation showed that most businesses want investment in roads ahead of high-speed rail.
The poll of more than 200 manufacturers also revealed frustration with the coalition's policy on airports, saying that decisions on future capacity should be speeded up.
Half of companies said their operating costs were significantly increased because of the state of the country's roads.
Fewer than one in four of those questioned said investment in high-speed rail was important to their company's growth.
The EEF called for an independent infrastructure commission to be set up, and said a greater share of public spending on transport should be allocated to roads.
Roger Salomone, the EEF's head of business environment policy, said: "Political prevarication and policy reversals have left Britain in the slow lane in developing its infrastructure for decades. Government must reassess its investment priorities, act faster on major issues like airport capacity and take the politics out of infrastructure by setting up an independent commission.
"In particular, the road network is the backbone of the economy but it has been neglected.
"We are now feeling the ill effects, with the majority of firms reporting that the state of the nation's roads is significantly increasing their operating costs. Investment should be targeted at shovel-ready maintenance projects and bringing forward upgrades to heavily-congested arteries.
"Furthermore, world-class air links are critical to export-led growth and attracting inward investment. To keep up with the competition, we need investment across the board, in Heathrow and in regional airports.
"Maintaining our status as a global aviation hub is critical to our international standing and expanding runway capacity at Heathrow is the most viable way to secure this."

Teachers threaten to boycott!!!!!!!! 'meaningless' primary literacy tests

       CO E T

guardian report:::
Teachers are threatening to boycott "meaningless" new literacy tests for primary school pupils.
At its annual conference in Liverpool, the National Union of Teachers (NUT) passed a motion calling for a boycott of spelling, punctuation and grammar tests for 11-year-olds and a reading check for six-year-olds. Both were introduced this year.
Delegates urged the NUT to hold talks with other teaching unions with a view to boycotting the tests next year. The union's members would need to be balloted for the action to go ahead.
The tests leave little time for art, music and books and make children feel like failures, teachers argue.
Since 1995, children have been required to sit literacy and numeracy tests in their last year of primary school. This year the tests include a spelling, grammar and punctuation paper.
Ministers have also introduced a reading test to be taken by six-year-olds. This uses phonics, a system that encourages children to use sounds to decipher words.
Joan Edwards, a primary teacher from Birmingham, said Michael Gove, the education secretary, wanted a "world without music, without art, without creativity".
"We as teachers want a more balanced education for our children. We want children to develop a love of reading, not reading for a test," she said.
Philipa Harvey, a primary teacher from Croydon, said the tests were too prescriptive.
The NUT's motion stated that the union "condemned the manipulation of the primary curriculum and teaching methods through the imposition of unnecessary tests, in particular Year 1 phonics screening and the Year 6 spelling, punctuation and grammar test".
Christine Blower, the NUT's general secretary, said the tests would leave many children feeling a failure.
"Primary school teachers are desperately concerned about what the school day will come to mean for their pupils," she said. "The proposed primary curriculum will set education back generations. We need to ensure that children are given a love of learning, reading, writing and maths but this is not the right way to go about it."
The NUT has already called for a boycott of school inspections. Delegates urged the union to investigate "as a matter of urgency" ways in which they could take action against the inspectorate, including a boycott, despite warnings that such a move would be illegal.
In 2010, teachers in a quarter of primary schools boycotted tests for 11-year-olds.
