South London student stabbed to death

Crime reporter(wp/es):
A student was stabbed to death by three teenage boys in a south London turf war after trying to retrieve his stolen bicycle, the Old Bailey heard.
Myron Yarde, 17, also known as Mdot, leant his bike to a friend so he could go and get a pizza from Dominos in New Cross.
But when the orange and black bike was stolen by a rival group of teenagers, he and his friends went to try and get it back.
Following a stand-off in New Cross Road on April 3, fuelled by anger at Snapchat pictures posted by one of Myron’s friends in a rival “territory”, Myron was “cornered” by three teenagers in Camplin Street and stabbed five times in the legs, the court heard.
He was rushed to hospital but died less than two hours later from his injuries.
Faux Richards, 19, of New Cross, and two 16-year-old boys are all accused of carrying out the murder in Camplin Street on April 3.
“The events in Camplin Street were the brutal culmination of matters that had begun a couple of hours earlier that day, and arose partly from the theft of a bicycle,” said prosecutor Lisa Wilding QC.
“However, that itself reflected an ongoing tension between groups of youths who lived in different but neighbouring parts of New Cross.”
The alleged killers were from an area of New Cross known as Monson, while Myron and his friends were from another area very close by.
Ms Wilding said Myron’s friend, Leoandro Osemeke - known to friends as Showkey - crossed the divide when he went to Dominos to order a pizza.

Leoandro, who himself was stabbed to death at a house party in Peckham a few months later, was followed from the pizza shop to a nearby block of flats by Monson teens who stole Myron’s bike, it is said.
Showkey posted Snapchat pictures from the block which were viewed as a “violation” of Monson territory, the court heard.
In the clashes that followed, said Ms Wilding, “Myron Yarde was stabbed five times in his legs, having been cornered against a wall in Camplin Street.
“The three men who surrounded him and stabbed him were these three male defendants.
“The evidence suggests they were each armed with a knife and without a doubt between the three of them, they inflicted those five wounds.”

Jurors heard news of the stabbing spread quickly on Snapchat, and one of the alleged killers, then just 15, said: “Why the F did he have to come to Monson?”
Jamie Kennedy, 31, and Charlotte Edmonds, 32, both of Bowditch, Surrey Quays, are accused of perverting the course of justice after the stabbing.
All five defendants deny the charges against them. The trial continues

Jubilee line Night Tube service starts this Friday

Staff reporter(wp/es):
The Jubilee line is going 24-hour this weekend as it becomes the third line to adopt the revolutionary Night Tube.
Thousands of passengers will be able to travel between Stratford and Stanmore throughout the night from Friday, with one train every ten minutes.
The line includes Canary Wharf, major stations Waterloo and London Bridge and is also close to two of London’s biggest venues; the O2 arena and Wembley Stadium.
It has been hailed as a “game-changer” for partygoers and workers alike.
An O2 spokeswoman told the Standard: “Over 60 per cent of our fans already use the Jubilee line to reach us. That will grow, the experience will improve, and it will enhance options for the teams who work here too.”

The Night Tube first launched on August 19 on the Central and Victoria lines, with over 100,000 people making use of it in the first weekend.
The Northern and Piccadilly lines are set to be added this autumn, although Transport for London has not given an exact date yet.
Sadiq Khan said: “The launch on the Jubilee line will support thousands more workers like nurses, cleaners and people who work in our bars and restaurants — many of whom currently take two night buses to get home. It will also serve some of our city’s key venues, with the O2, Wembley Stadium and Stratford on the route.”

Night fares on the Jubilee line will be the same as standard off-peak, while day travelcards will still be accepted for journeys made until 04.29 the next morning.
Some bus services will be extended in order to meet the increased demand for traveling to and from Night Tube stations.
All stations will be staffed by London Underground employees throughout the night, while there will also be an enhanced presence of British Transport Police officers.
The Circle is likely to be the sixth Night Tube line, meaning the 24-hour service will connect to all mainline train stations.
There are long-term hopes to extend it to the District and Metropolitan lines, and on Crossrail between Paddington and Abbey Wood after it opens in 2018.
