special business report(weastar times/wp/g):::
Pets at Home, the THE ROYAL ENGLAND largest pet store business, has bought Vets4Pets for £40m, and will integrate the latter's 93 veterinary practices into its 166 in-store vet business.
The deal will net millions for Vets4Pets' founder, Peter Watson, a former Specsavers and Vision Express executive who set up the veterinary firm 12 years ago.
It will mean Pets at Home will become one of the largest veterinary chains in the country and practices could eventually overtake the number of stores.
The business has already expanded beyond selling dog food, scratching posts and bird cages, to offering grooming and de-fleaing services.
Its chief executive, Nick Wood, said: "The expansion of our veterinary business is a key element of our growth strategy for Pets at Home, providing additional services to our customers within our stores or close to our customers' homes."
Wood joined the retailer last year from American Golf, replacing Matt Davies, who went on to run Halfords.
Pets at Home has 346 stores, almost half of which already have in-house vets thanks to a linkup with Companion Care, which will continue to work alongside the new venture.
The purchase of Vest4Pets lead to the retailer having 210 veterinary practices in total. Pets at Home owns nearly 10% of all surgeries across the UK with a turnover of £100m. It also operates 86 in-store grooming salons.
The company was bought by private equity group KKR three years ago, in a deal worth £955m.
It followed a highly competitive auction between some of the world's biggest private equity groups, which persuaded its owner, Bridgepoint, to ditch plans for going public on the stock market.
Last year the company saw sales up 7.1% to £544.3m, with like-for-like revenues up 1.3%. Underlying pretax profits were up 0.5% at £91.7m.

NUS new elected president named Toni Pearce

NUS new elected  president named Toni Pearce

university correspondent(wp/guardian):::
NUS has elected Toni Pearce, the current vice-president for further education, to replace Liam Burns as president this summer.
Pearce, who will be the second NUS president to have studied at college rather than university, says she'll put further education (FE) back on the agenda.
"Higher education and further education students face many of the same problems – from student finance to the lack of affordable accommodation, we should tackle these together."
"We've started to really prioritise the work that we do for FE students. A few years ago making a campaign like further education loans a priority on the national agenda would have seemed a bit odd, and we might not have done it. We've come a long way."
Pearce, who had the backing of outgoing president Liam Burns, won a 57.8% share of the votes.
She beat competition from Vicki Baars, the most left-wing candidate (28.7%) and Peter Smallwood, a rare Tory candidate (12.4%). The election's protest candidate, an "inanimate carbon rod", which was represented by UCL student Sam Gaus, withdrew from the race on Tuesday morning.
Pearce will use her time as president to campaign for a new postgraduate funding system, a replacement for education maintenance allowance (EMA) and better pay for apprenticeships. She also plans to campaign for a single Ucas system for further and higher education.
But a national demonstration will not help achieve these goals, she added: "This year is about returning to campuses and reconnecting with students."
In his last conference speech delivered as president, Liam Burns also warned that demonstrations aren't the only way to lobby government.
Burns was criticised following last November's demonstration, with many claiming he had failed to fight the trebling of tuition fees. Speaking at the NUS national conference yesterday, he said: "If you stand on this stage and claim that we should demand free education, living grants for all, we will win nothing."
Pearce has been the NUS vice-president for further education since 2011 and was president of Cornwall College Students' Union between 2009-11. The only other NUS president to have come from a further education background is MP for Rochdale, Lorna Fitzsimons, who was president from 1992-4.

County Cricket Championship 2013 returns new hope and new looks

County Cricket Championship 2013 returns new hope and new looks

sports reporter(wp/g):::
Anniversaries are all the rage ahead of the start of the County Championship season on Wednesday, most of them 150ths. You will have done well to escape the momentous news that this year's edition of Wisden is its 150th, so efficiently has it been promoted, with the official launch rather unfortunately timed for Thursday morning – not great news for anyone hoping that the opening days' play in the Championship might receive much coverage in the papers.
Yorkshire and Hampshire are celebrating the same milestone, although without the daily plugs in the Times. No other media are allowed to carry any Wisden stuff until Wednesday's embargo but it feels more appropriate for The Guardian to dwell on another milestone that has been reached on the eve of the season.
Neville Cardus would have been 125 last Wednesday and the occasion was marked by a lunch in his honour at Old Trafford – now officially Emirates Old Trafford, as Cardus would not have called it. Michael Kennedy, the former music critic of the Sunday Telegraph, gave a speech to an audience that included representatives of the two Mancunian institutions with which Cardus is most closely linked –Lancashire and the HallĂ©. But the main purpose of the lunch was tolaunch the Neville Cardus Archive, which will be founded in the redeveloped Old Trafford pavilion when it is opened later in the summer. A good option for those rare occasions in Manchester when rain stops play ...
Heaven knows what Cardus would have made of Lancashire starting the season in Division Two or of the presence of a travelling Fun Fair on the Old Trafford car park. But that has now moved on and the ground is being prepared for Wednesday's opening fixture against Worcestershire, the other team relegated last season.
Spare a thought for the county groundsmen who, after enduring the miserably wet summer of 2012 – when their efforts were recognised by the Peter Smith Award presented by the Cricket Writers' Club for services to the presentation of the game – have shivered through what has so far passed for spring trying to ready their squares for the new campaign.
At the time of writing it is still forecast to be chilly but mostly dry at 11am on Wednesday. There is a full round of four fixtures in each division, withSurrey and Kent the two counties required to wait for a further week, and barring plague or pestilence our County Blog will be back on Wednesday morning.
Choosing three of the eight to cover was not easy but we could not ignore Derbyshire's first game in Division One for 12 years, against the champions Warwickshire at Edgbaston. Vic Marks is heading there and Richard Gibson will be on hand for the start of Yorkshire's 150th celebrations, against a Sussex team for whom Rory Hamilton-Brown is expected to return. Durham's opener against Somerset is also intriguing, not least because of the uncertainty over who will keep wicket for the visitors – Craig Kieswetter is expected to start with the gloves, which still suits Somerset best, however much England want Jos Buttler to be given more experience behind the stumps. Meanwhile Graham Onions will presumably be licking his lips about the return to the English conditions in which he prospered last year. If Marcus Trescothick wins the toss and chooses to bat, we could even have a Banger and Onions pun in the first over.
Apologies for ignoring Division Two in this opening round but that does not set a precedent for the year, honest. As ever, we will be relying heavily on our below-the-line regulars to keep us bang – OK, reasonably – up to date with whatever they have had for breakfast – sorry, what is happening around the shires – some of them doubtless helped by theBBC's ball-by-ball coverage which has been expanded to a new level of comprehensiveness this summer, terrific news for all lovers of the county game. Hopefully the original County Blog (it was, wasn't it?) can continue to be seen as a complement to that, even in a year when the Champions Trophy and especially the Ashes promise to dominate the cricketing landscape.

Cheshire deaths of two women under

investigating

crime reporter,Cheshire(weastar times/wp/g):::
An investigation is under way after the bodies of two women were found in a house in Cheshire.
The women, believed to be Rachel Clayton, 34, and Emma Speed, 30, were found when ambulance crews were called to a residential address in Macclesfield at about 8.20pm on Sunday.
It is thought the alarm was raised by a friend and paramedics subsequently notified Cheshire police.
Fire service and gas engineers, who attended the property shortly afterwards to check for a leak, said tests proved negative.
Postmortem examinations were due to take place to establish the cause of the deaths, but detectives confirmed they were not looking for anyone in connection with the incident.
A spokeswoman said: "Cheshire police is currently investigating the deaths of two women at a house in Macclesfield … Formal identification has not yet taken place.
"The deaths are being treated as unexplained but at this stage there is not believed to be any third-party involvement. Inquiries are ongoing."
