Three criminal centenced over murder in Leicester

crime reporter,leiceshter(weastar times/Ebc):::gan Dogan, 50, was found dead in his flat above Aladdin's Pizza, on Linton Street in Evington, on 8 January.

Sarwar Gader, 35, of Gleneagles Avenue, Leicester, Wali Khan, 32, of no fixed abode, and Naveed Naveed, 28, of St Stephens Road, Leicester, were all convicted at Birmingham Crown Court.

All three men must serve a minimum term of 28 years.

Naveed and Gader were also found guilty of robbery. Khan had pleaded guilty to robbery at an earlier hearing.

Broken ribs

Leicestershire Police said Mr Dogan's hands and feet had been tied and a towel and several layers of clothing were tied over his face.

He died of asphyxiation and also had broken ribs and a black eye.

Takings of about £1,000 from both of Mr Dogan's businesses, Aladdin's Pizza and Pizzaman, in Lutterworth, were missing from the bedsit.

Naveed's car was seen being driven away from the scene in the early hours of 8 January, and keys belonging to Mr Dogan were witnessed being thrown from the vehicle as it was driven through Leicester, police said.

Det Ch Insp Tom Davies, who led the investigation, said: "Mr Dogan was a much loved husband and father. He sadly never got to meet his grandchild who was born shortly after he died."

He added that Mr Dogan's family showed tremendous dignity during the trial.

A Hertfordshire nurse who called a 99-year-old patient "evil", kicked him and told him she would spit in his face has been suspended.

Christina Gavigan, a sister, tried to drag another patient along the floor by her feet at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found 21 of 25 accusations proved and suspended Ms Gavigan for 12 months.

She did not attend and was not represented at the four-day Conduct and Competence Committee hearing in London.

It heard "serious concerns" were raised during one Saturday shift at the accident and emergency department in October 2008.

Ms Gavigan, a nurse for 28 years, was the leader of the shift when a "very challenging, aggressive, uncooperative and confused" man was in the unit.

The NMC heard the man was calling out "help me" but Ms Gavigan said "just leave him" and later got up close to him and called him "evil" and a "horrible man".

He was overheard to say he would spit in her face, to which she replied she would "spit in your face".

Ms Gavigan was also seen to kick him and then say "oops, I just kicked you" and told him, when he asked for a cup of tea, that he did not deserve one.

The committee found she also called a "distressed" patient a "waste of space", shouted at her and told her to shut up.

The woman had been placed on a mattress on the floor to reduce the risk of a fall, but had tried to crawl out of the cubicle.

The NMC found it proved Ms Gavigan pushed the patient along the ground with her foot, nudged her head with her foot and tried to drag her back into the cubicle by her feet.

She also slammed a door when the woman was about one metre away and was crawling along the floor.

Another sister who queried why Ms Gavigan was shouting at the patient was then verbally abused, the committee found.

She also spoke loudly to a third patient's son about his mother's condition when the patient had not been told of the situation.

The NMC concluded a suspension for 12 months, the maximum period available, sent out a clear message that Ms Gavigan's conduct was unacceptable.

Two gang member jailed forlife for killing Paul Morson in Merseyside over 'drug dispute'

Ray Brierley, 59, of Whiston, and John Burns, 34, of Huyton, both in Merseyside, were found guilty of murder after a trial at Liverpool Crown Court.

Brierley was told he must serve at least 25 years, and Burns 30 years, in prison.

A third man, Scott Callaghan, 33, from Anfield, Liverpool, was found not guilty of murder but guilty of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to eight years in prison.

Morson was jailed for 11 months in 2006 after admitting supplying a getaway car to the killers of Liverpool teenager Anthony Walker.

He admitted perverting the course of justice after supplying the car to Paul Taylor and Michael Barton, who received life sentences for the racist murder of Mr Walker, 18, in Huyton in July 2005.

When he was last seen Morson was in a borrowed van, which was found abandoned on the A50 in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, two weeks later.

Det Supt Dave Brunskill, said the investigation into his kidnap and murder was one of the most complex he had been involved in.

He appealed for anyone with information on the whereabouts of his body to come forward.

Mr Brunskill said: "The murder of Paul was a tragedy for his family and girlfriend, who went through the agony of not knowing for several months how and why he had disappeared.

"They have had to come to terms with his death while not having a body to lay to rest, which has made it particularly difficult for them.

"No-one ever deserves to be harmed or killed but this case has shown the lengths that ruthless men like Burns and Brierley are prepared to go to protect their criminal enterprises."
