£3m fund given for Superfast broadband in Berkshire
ICT reporter,berkshire(weastar times/Ebc):::
Almost £3m has been pledged to provide homes and businesses in rural Berkshire with superfast broadband.
A consultation is under way to find providers for the Superfast Berkshire project, which aims to connect 47,000 premises by 2015.
The government has pledged £1.43m, with the county's six unitary councils and parish councils providing the same.
Keith Ulyatt, of West Berkshire Council, called the project is "aiming for 90% coverage".
He added: "If we can get it... that will be a heck of a lot better than it is at the moment."
'Vibrant environment'
Jane Rimmer, who runs a business from her home in Binfield, said access to broadband was "imperative".
"We do not have broadband at all. I am currently utilising satellite broadband that is costing me £90 a month."
Colin Batchelor, Superfast Berkshire project manager, said: "Expanding superfast broadband will further develop the vibrant economic environment that is a cornerstone of the county's prosperity.
"This consultation is key to finalising the plan that, in tandem with commercial providers, will roll-out superfast broadband to the vast majority of premises in Berkshire."
The consultation runs until 28 March.
